Spoken and Sign Language Interpreter Training in the Czech Republic and Austria

The thesis focuses on possibilities of spoken and sign language interpreter training in the Czech Republic and Austria. The theoretical part describes the situation of the deaf in the Czech Republic and in Austria and explains the terms connected with communication of the deaf. Furthermore, it contains a brief overview of the history of spoken and sign language interpreter training and a description of the conditions for interpreters in both countries respectively. The most detailed chapters of the theoretical part deal with training institutions for spoken and sign language interpreters. The main focus is on the Institute of Translation studies at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague and the Department of Translation Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of Graz. The empirical part presents the results of a questionnaire survey conducted among Master students of the two institutes who evaluated how well the university prepares them for their future career.

Time Prepositions in Writings of Czech Deaf

The thesis deals with the written Czech language of the Czech Deaf, specifically with time prepositions in written Czech language of the Czech Deaf. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with feature and classification of Czech prepositions, especially time prepositions, based on Czech linguistic studies, and deals with attributes of written Czech language of the Czech Deaf related to use of prepositions. The practical part of the thesis includes research focused on usage of time prepositions in writings of the Czech Deaf and includes the analysis of qualities in the usage of prepositional phrases by the deaf students of secondary school for the hearing-impaired in Hradec Králové and analysis of written texts of Czech deaf students of secondary schools for the hearing-impaired. The thesis is based on Czech and foreign studies related to relevant topics and it should be a contribution to teachers who work in Czech shools for hearing-impared.

Written Texts of Czech Deaf

The topic of the dissertation is the communication of the deaf in written Czech. The theoretical part presents the studies of written Czech for the deaf which have been carried out in the Czech Republic so far, considers the causes of difficulties the deaf encounter when making Czech written texts, and deals with the position of written Czech in the education of the deaf. The next part is devoted to the Czech sign language, the characteristics of its specifics and its role in the communication and education of deaf pupils, especially in connection with the currently valid legislation. Attention is also focused on the components and construction of narrative texts and on the acquisition of narrative competencies in spoken and sign languages. The research part is focused on the qualitative analysis of narrative texts in Czech, the authors of which are deaf pupils of two primary schools for the hearing impaired aged 14 to 16, and which were created on the basis of a picture story. As part of the analysis of written narratives, attention is focused on the specific features which make the written texts of the deaf different from the texts written by hearing Czechs. Stereotypes of Nationalities, and Signes for Nations in the Czech Sign Language

The methodology of exploring stereotypes in spoken languages has been described in Jerzy Bartmiński's papers in great detail.Bartmiński works with three types of data (linguistic, textual and empirical ones), which he uses to formulate a cognitive definition describing the stereotype of the explored phenomenon. This work is the first of its kind to attempt to apply this methodology to exploring ethnic stereotypes in the Czech Sign Language. Sign languages are visual-motoric by their nature and lack a written form, which brings certain difficulties when exploring textual data. Therefore, for the purpose of exploring stereotypes in these languages the aforementioned method had to be modified in numerous ways. It is especially the linguistic data which have become important here, along with the empirical ones to a certain extent. It turns out that the sought stereotypes are most frequently contained in the very form of the sign (in the so-called parameters, i.e. hand shape, location, movement etc.) or in modifications of its parameters. This is documented on ten different ethnic stereotypes in the Czech Sign Language.

The English Language Teaching Methodology for Learners with Impaired Hearing

The dissertation The English Language Teaching Methodology for Learners with Impaired Hearing deals with the current situation in the field of ELT in special secondary schools for learners with impaired hearing. It has two main aims: - 1) to gather knowledge from ELT methodology and combine it with information from other source disciplines, e.g. special pedagogy, pedagogy, psychology, and linguistics to form a coherent basis of special systemic English language teaching methodology for learners with impaired hearing; - 2) to carry out a research project in the field of reading with deaf and hard-of-hearing learners at secondary schools since reading is the skill which is practised by all groups of learners with hearing impairment. The dissertation summarizes information on these learners, it describes their characteristics and needs. Main communication methods are presented, as well as some thoughts on the development of language and mind of the deaf. A substantial part of the work is devoted to motivation, emotional and personal development of deaf learners and to their practical communicative needs in the classroom. Providing Interpretation Services for the Deaf within Districts of Czech Republic

This final paper is focused on the recent situation of providing interpretation services for the deaf in Czech Republic. It discusses the development of interpretation services in Czech Republic from seventies of the twentieth century until the present time. In this paper also various approaches to interpretation for the deaf are included as well as the role of interpreter and legislation norms associated with interpretation. It also describes functioning of interpretation organizations providing interpretation services. It also mentions the historical turbulences and milestones in the development of interpretation services that have had a considerable impact on the deaf community and that particularly have been directly connected to the sign language legislation and to the changes of the sign language interpreter's Code of Ethics. The data provided by the Czech Chamber of Sign Language Interpreters (Komora) have been the base for practical part of this final paper. The thesis deals with the written Czech language of the Czech Deaf, specifically with time prepositions. The theoretical part of the thesis summarizes knowledge about the written Czech language of the Czech Deaf, the ways of expressing tense in Czech language and in Czech sign language and gives the description of Czech prepositions, especially Czech time prepositions. The second part of the thesis is practical and includes the research focused on using time prepositions in writings of the Czech Deaf. The research includes the analysis of written texts and also testing of qualities in the usage of prepositional phrases by pupils and students of schools for the hearing-impaired. Interrogative expressions in Czech Sign Language

Anotation The bachelor's thesis focuses on the useage of interrogative expressions in Czech sign language. It provides an overview of the interrogative expressions excerpted from Czech sign language dictionaries and of a video, which was made in the context of research into the use and misuse of expressions that were excerpted from dictionaries. In addition, the thesis deals with the construction of the interrogative sentences in Czech language and other foreign sign languages. Part of the thesis is a DVD which captures examples of interrogative sentences in Czech sign language as performed by deaf respondents of a survey who use Czech sign language.
